Supplementary duty reduced for used hybrid cars
The government has permitted used hybrid car import along with reduced supplementary duty (SD) to boost up hybrid car sales in the country. Supplementary duty has been reduced by 5 percent to 25 percent for 0 to 1,600 cc used hybrid car import and 15 percent to 45 percent for 1,600 to 2,000 cc used hybrid car import for the fiscal year 2017-18. For used hybrid car above 2,000 cc but less than 3,000 cc, SD has been reduced to 60 percent from 150 percent of previous fiscal year. SD for higher engine displacement has been reduced too.
The lowered supplementary duty significantly reduced the cost of imported used hybrid car enabling the importers to sell at lower price and consequently hybrid car sales has been surging in the country. The significantly lower price and better fuel efficiency are helping the more environment friendly vehicles to gain popularity.
According to the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA), import of reconditioned vehicles has been almost doubled to a total of 11,476 units in the first half of the year comparing to the same period of previous year. Hybrid car sale is expected to rise even more once the batteries and repairing services are more widely available in the country.
